This afternoon Congressman John Hall joined the growing chorus of elected officials all calling for State Senator Hiram Monserrate to resign or be removed.
"All New Yorkers, especially those who have been victims of domestic abuse, deserve to have Senator Monserrate step down or be removed from office. Monserrate has been convicted of a deplorable crime. The New York State Senate should set the example that violence against women will not be tolerated in our society."

For anyone not familiar with the Monserrate matter, Sen Monserrate was convicted of misdemeanor assault for a battery of his girlfriend. In the incident, the girlfriend was slashed with a broken glass, cutting her cheek to the bone. Video cameras captured the senator manhandling the woman in the foyer of the apartment building. Although the video shows the woman clearly trying to get away, she later insisted the slashing was an accident. There was not enough other evidence to convict the Senator for the slashing.
It is clear that Sen Monserrate is a batterer. Violence against women is not only not acceptable behavior, but it must be exposed and there can be no sense of getting away with the violent conduct.
Thank you John Hall for your principled statement.

what a shae
Seth1 (not verified) on Thu, 10/22/2009 - 10:18its a shame Hall is going after Monseratte only because he is up for re-election. if this were any other year, we wouldn't hear a word. when is he going to go after Rangel?
Really?
john on Thu, 10/22/2009 - 11:18What evidence do you have that John Hall makes a statement, like dozens of other electeds, only because he is running for relection? There can be so such evidence. Monserrate was convicted of domestic violence last week. A comment from Congressman Hall this week was appropriate, silence would have been inappropriate.
As for Rangel, there is currently an investigation by the House Ethics committee. I agree that there should be a different process for such investigations, but the available process is being used.
In the former case, there is a conviction, in the latter there are very serious allegations. The response to each should not be the same.
